Photoelectric Effect & Matter Waves: Master Notes

Chapter Overview

The Photoelectric Effect established the particle nature of light, while de Broglie's hypothesis established the wave nature of matter. In IIT-JEE (Advanced), the most tested problems involve stopping potential (V0) vs frequency (ν) graphs, photoelectric current saturation vs intensity, matter wave wavelength under accelerating potentials (λ=h2mqV), and radiation pressure photon flux.

1. Einstein's Photoelectric Equation

Ephoton=hν=hcλ≈12400eV⋅\AAλ(\AA)≈1240eV⋅nmλ(nm)hν=Φ+Kmax=Φ+eV0

Where:

  • Φ=hν0=hcλ0 is the Work Function of the photosensitive metal.
  • ν0 is the Threshold Frequency, λ0 is the Threshold Wavelength.
  • V0 is the Stopping Potential (retarding voltage that drops photocurrent to zero).

C (IAOR) v_cm
Linear Acceleration: acm=gsin⁡θ1+Icm/(MR2)=23gsin⁡θa_{\text{cm}} = \frac{g\sin\theta}{1 + I_{\text{cm}}/(MR^2)} = \frac{2}{3}g\sin\theta
Critical Tension Angle: ϕc=arccos⁡(r/R)\phi_c = \arccos(r/R)

2. Photocurrent Characteristics & Photon Flux

  • Photon Flux (Nph): Number of photons arriving per unit time on area A:Nph=Ppowerhν=IintensityAhν
  • Saturation Photocurrent (Isat):Isat=η⋅e⋅Nph=ηe(Phν)(where η is the quantum efficiency, typically 1%−5%).
  • Key Experimental Laws:
    1. Saturation current is strictly proportional to light intensity (Isat∝Intensity).
    2. Stopping potential V0 is independent of light intensity and depends linearly on frequency ν.
    3. Photoelectric emission is instantaneous (time lag <10−9 s).

4. Authentic Previous Years Questions (PYQs)

PYQ 1: JEE Advanced 2022 (Paper 1) — Photoelectric Stopping Potential Graph

Question:
When light of frequency ν1=8.0×1014 Hz illuminates a metal surface, the stopping potential is V01=2.0 V. When light of frequency ν2=4.0×1014 Hz illuminates the same metal, the stopping potential is V02=0.5 V. Find:

  1. Planck's constant h.
  2. The work function Φ of the metal in eV.

Step-by-Step Solution:

  • 1. Using Einstein's Equation for Both Frequencies:

    eV01=hν1−Φ--- (1)eV02=hν2−Φ--- (2)

    Subtracting (2) from (1):

    e(V01−V02)=h(ν1−ν2)h=e(2.0−0.5)8.0×1014−4.0×1014=1.6×10−19×1.54.0×1014=2.4×10−194.0×1014=6.0×10−34 J⋅s
  • 2. Work Function Φ:

    Φ=hν2−eV02=hν2e−V02=(6.0×10−34)(4.0×1014)1.6×10−19 eV−0.5 eVΦ=2.4×10−191.6×10−19 eV−0.5 eV=1.5 eV−0.5 eV=1.0 eV

PYQ 2: JEE Advanced 2020 — de Broglie Wavelength Ratio

Question:
An electron and a photon each have a de Broglie wavelength of λ=1.0 nm. Find the ratio of the kinetic energy of the photon to the kinetic energy of the electron. (me=9.1×10−31 kg).

Step-by-Step Solution:

  1. Energy of Photon:Ephoton=hcλ
  2. Kinetic Energy of Electron:Kelectron=p22me=h22meλ2
  3. Ratio:EphotonKelectron=hcλh22meλ2=2mecλhEphotonKelectron=2×(9.1×10−31)×(3×108)×(1.0×10−9)6.63×10−34=5.46×10−316.63×10−34≈823.5
